When did the idea of the shop started?
When my husband and me moved to Baleal, we wanted to open something and we had this place here. So we opened a grocerie store because there was nothing like it. This was in 2013. We did it for 2 years but then the big supermarket opened and we needed to give up. We couldn’t compete with them. Then we traveled to Sri Lanka and thought about other things we could do in Baleal. We really wanted to integrate to people we knew in our storeconcept. So the idea came up to open a surfstore which supports the art of local artists. Also it should become a place where people like to hang out.
Why in Peniche?
Because of the waves! We both grew up next to Nazaré and we were surfing a lot in Peniche. So we thought „why not move there“. It’s only a thirty minutes drive, but still: We can surf here everyday and we don’t need to drive up.
Why did you choose the name „Hang Five“ for your store?
We are both longboarders and pretty passionate about it. So we decided to choose that longboard technique as storename.
What is the concept of the store?
We like to sell things which are made in Portugal. In this store, 80% of the stuff we sell is produced in our country. We want to support local artists and small protects. This a place where they have a sellingspot and visibility to the world.
How do you choose or find the artists?
We don’t have to look for them, they come to us. The energy flows very easily in the this small town, people hang out mostly by the end of the day and have a beer. So the creative people get together and start talking about their work. So things have happened in a very natural way. One of this artists is our lovely friend Lizzy, she is such a talented creative souls and we absolutely love her illustrations!
